Modeling How To
Making clear parts for a lighted kit
Basically this is a method of doing a quick and dirty recast or partial cast of a part of a vinyl kit that you want to light up. The technique works best when the part that has to light up is slightly recessed or otherwise some how set off from the rest of the piece that it's molded into.
Materials: EZ-Water, Sculpty, Pam, or similar kitchen spray, Rubber Cement
Step 1. Molding the part
The first thing to do is to coat the exterior of the part with a light coat of non stick kitchen spray.
After that is finished press a lump of Sculpty into the part over the section that you want to light up.
Then carefully remove the Sculpty making sure not to distort it, and bake it until hard.
Step 2. Prep work.
After making a quick mold of the surface, carefully cut out the section that you want to light and then trim the edges of the hole back so that the sides of the whole are beveled wider in the interior. |
Coat the edges of the mold with rubber cement or similar stickum and wipe a little kitchen spray over the section of the mold where the lighted section will be. Then reaffix the mold to the model kit
Step 3. Casting the Part
Take the final assembled part and mold and pour EZ Water down into the part where the mold is attached, Try to get the EZ water directly into the mold since it doesn't
flow easily once it starts to harden. (In a worst case situation pop out the hardened EZ water, melt it down and pour again)
Once the EZ Water is solid remove the mold and clean the stickum and kitchen spray off of the part and you are all set.

Works In Progress
Anime Centaur
Inspired by a Phil Folglio illustration to GURPS: Illuminati University this was built up from a Bryers Arabian that I've had for ages and a vinyl anime girl kit, I removed the horse's head and made a Sculpty plug for the waist to fit the two together, the legwarmers are small bands of Friendly plastic and the bow in progress on the tail is Sculpty, The only thing it's really lacking at the moment is a decent paint job.
Diana & Actaeon
One of my favorite myths. I'm Working on getting it turned into a garage kit...

Noise Marine Dreadnought
I'm adding this to my Slaneesh Chaos Space Marine Army in order to give my Noise Marines a percussion section. The dreadnought is fairly stock, but I've added 2 Warp Amps made from 40K tank hatches and a heavy flamer slung under the arm, as well as replacing the autocannon tips w plastic tubing and dark eldar spikey bits..
